Formula: Marks needed = (Target% × Course total) − Marks so far, where Course total = Total marks so far + Final exam total marks · Formula source: standard final-exam formula, as set out in How it works below · Last reviewed: 8 November 2026

How it works

First, add your total marks so far to the final exam total marks to get the course total. Then multiply the course total by your target percentage, divided by 100, to get the total marks you need overall. Then subtract the marks you have obtained so far. For example, with 180 out of 250 so far, and a final exam worth 100 and a target of 75%, the course total is 350, 75% of 350 is 262.5, and 262.5 minus 180 is 82.5, so you need 83 marks in the final exam, rounded up.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the answer rounded up?

Marks are whole numbers, so the calculator rounds the exact figure up to the next whole mark. Scoring 82 when you need 82.5 would leave you just short of your target.

What if the target is not possible?

If the marks needed are more than the final exam is worth, even a perfect final exam would not reach your target. The calculator will tell you this and show the highest overall percentage you can still reach.

Can I use this for a weighted final exam?

Yes, as long as you enter the marks in the same units. Enter the marks obtained so far, the total marks so far, and the final exam total marks, all as marks rather than as weights.

What if I have already reached my target?

The calculator will say you need zero marks in the final exam and that you have already reached your target, even before the final exam.
